A Writer’s Wishes and Dreams

Cuban Cigar
  • I wish Peter Dawson well in his retirement from his jobs as chief executive of R&A Ltd and secretary of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. He left his magnificent office in the sturdy R&A clubhouse for the last time last Friday. At a farewell dinner on Saturday night he was given Adam Scott’s long putter as a memento of the R&A’s stand against anchoring.
  • I wish that Seve Ballesteros hadn’t died. He was my one true hero.
  • I wish that my backswing could be slower and my downswing quicker.
  • I wish that I could spend more time playing golf in Ireland. The combination of the warmth of the Irish and the quality of their links courses is irresistible.
  • I wish Bill Fields, the American golf writer, would write more. He is the game’s historian. No one else comes close.
