Sei Young Kim birdied the 72nd hole to win the Blue Bay LPGA on Sunday, one shot ahead of a trio of players. Kim shot a final-round 70 to post a 72-hole total of 2-under-par 286 at Jian Lake Blue Bay Golf Course on Hainan Island in China. It was Kim’s third LPGA Tour victory in this, her rookie season. She won the Lotte Championship in April and the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic in February, both in playoffs.
Who didn’t win
Stacy Lewis, Kim Kaufman and Candie Kung finished at 1-under 287 and tied for the runner-up spot. Lewis shot 70 in the final round, Kaufman posted 69 and Kung signed for 71. It was Lewis’ sixth runner-up finish of the year to go with three third-place finishes. Sandra Gal, Xi Yu Lin and Alena Sharp tied for fifth at 3-over 291.
How it happened
Lewis took the lead in the final round with a birdie at the par-3 11th hole that gave her a two-shot lead and put her at 2 under for the championship. But she made a bogey at the par-4 13th while Kim made birdie to tie. Kim made birdie at the par-5 14th to take the lead. Kim missed the green at the par-3 17th while Lewis and Kung had birdie putts, both within 4 feet. Kim missed a 20-foot par putt and, surprisingly, Lewis and Kung both missed birdie putts. It created a four-way tie for the lead with one hole to play.
