Tony Finau, in his second year on the PGA Tour, won his first Tour event with a victory at the Puerto Rico Open in a three-hole playoff with Steve Marino. Finau, 26, birdied the par-5 18th at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, three straight times in the playoff to upend Marino. Finau and Marino each shot 2-under 70 in the final round and tied in regulation at 12-under 276.
WHO DIDN’T WIN:
Marino was also trying for his first PGA Tour victory after regaining his Tour playing privileges in the Web.com Tour Finals last fall. Ian Poulter, who hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2010, led after 54 holes and could manage just one birdie in his final-round 72 and tied for third at 11 under with Rodolfo Cazaubon of Mexico. Cazaubon made his PGA Tour debut and the 26-year-old shot 68 in the final round. He has won three times on PGA Tour Latinoamérica. Andres Romero of Argentina (67 in the final round) tied for fifth at 10 under with Nick Taylor of Canada (70) and Scott Brown (71).
