RANCHO MIRAGE, CALIFORNIA | Chalk it up to life, which has a way of overwhelming all of us at various times. Stacy Lewis showed up at Mission Hills for the ANA Inspiration a different person than she was a year ago when she lost a playoff to Brittany Lincicome, one of nine runner-up finishes Lewis has posted on the LPGA Tour since she last hoisted a trophy in June 2014. Gone was the intensely private, unfailingly polite golf geek we’ve grown to know. In her place was a vulnerable woman ready to open up to the world.
“Being No.1 (in the world) is not necessarily the goal like it used to be because I know what it takes and what goes into that,” Lewis said in a revealing pre-tournament press conference. “You have to play a lot of tournaments. You have to travel a lot. You have to play around the world. It’s a lot of sacrifice to be No. 1 in the world. And that’s what I learned being in that position. Right now, that’s not necessarily a goal of mine, because I have goals off the golf course that are more important, sometimes.”
