NAPLES, FLORIDA | Tony Gil birdied the final hole at Naples National Golf Club to win the Terra Cotta Invitational, the biggest victory in his young career. An 18-year-old member of the Canadian National Development Squad, Gil shot 2-under-par 214 to defeat Andy Zhang by a shot.
Gil, two behind the leaders after 36 holes, found himself in a multi-player shootout in the final round. The lead was exchanged several times, but after 53 holes Gil, Zhang and Andrew McCain were deadlocked at 1-under par. Gil was in the next-to-last group, playing behind Zhang and first-round leader McCain. He pulled his drive on the par-5 18th, advanced his second back into play and then lofted a 100-yard wedge shot to 4 feet. He rolled in the putt, and then waited anxiously as the last group played the final hole. Zhang missed his birdie chance and McCain suffered a bogey, enabling Gil to prevail.
