Think the folks at TaylorMade are excited about the new R9 Super Tri and SuperTri TP drivers that they launched at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines last month? They must be when you consider how they describe them as “the most advanced, highest performing drivers TaylorMade has ever developed.”
The enthusiasm comes in part from the equipment maker’s ability to combine for the first time in one 460cc head two of its previous performance advances – Flight Control Technology (FCT) and Movable Weight Technology (MWT). Company engineers say that marks “the ultimate unification of TaylorMade’s major driver technologies with maximum size to deliver massive distance and forgiveness.”
As far as those fellows are concerned, the reasons that combination works are simple: the larger head is more forgiving, the center of gravity is located farther back in the clubhead to promote easier and higher ball launches and the three MWT weights allow for side-to-side trajectory change of up to 75 yards.
TaylorMade officials say other factors make each Super Tri perform so well. One is the application of Inverted Cone Technology (ICT), which increases the clubface area that delivers fast ball speed, encouraging more distance on off-center hits. Another is better and more widespread use of TaylorMade’s Ultra Thin Wall technology (UTW). Then, there is the stylish, black-on-black clubhead that is sleeker than previous R9 models, the result of a reshaped crown that reduces wind resistance while providing the deepest face TaylorMade has ever incorporated into a driver with MWT.
Twenty-five TaylorMade players put a SuperTri into play last month at the Farmers Insurance Open and it instantly became the No. 1 driver model at the tournament. Company officials say several of those golfers switched after trying them out on the Torrey Pines range and seeing significant increases in driver distance and ball speed.
The SuperTri comes with three weights, a FCT torque wrench and a Fujikura Motore 60-gram shaft. The club is available in four lofts – 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 – and five shaft flexes – L, M, R, S, X. Street price is $399. The SuperTri TP features the same head but features a choice of 10 premium shafts, including Aldila Voodoo, Mitsubishi Fubuki and Matrix Ozik. Choosing one of those custom shafts adds $100 to the cost.
