Designed for Comfort

Layering has long been used in outdoor sports such as skiing and hiking as a way of staying comfortable in even the most adverse – or erratic – weather. But it has never been employed as effectively in golf, mostly because apparel and outerwear makers have not offered players the same sophisticated layering options that athletes in those other activities have enjoyed for so many years.

FootJoy intends to change that with the introduction of its FJ Layering System, which utilizes a range of technical garments so players can better regulate body temperature and better adapt to changes in weather as they also maintain a complete range of motion during the golf swing.

“The theme of this line is “Make Every Day Playable,” and the idea is to provide our customers with performance-based products that are designed by golfers specifically for golfers,” says Andy Jones, vice president of gloves, accessories and apparel for Titleist and FootJoy.

FootJoy’s new system, which was developed with extensive feedback from Tour pros and avid golfers, begins with the ProDry Performance Base Layer. Available in black and white, it’s a long-sleeved, crew-neck garment with an anti-microbial finish that fits closely to the skin to help regulate temperature by moving perspiration away from the body – but without restricting movement. “This is the first time something like this has been designed specifically for golf,” says Jones, adding that Steve Stricker wore elements of the FJ Layering System during the Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Then comes the Mid Layer, in the form of a half-zip pullover made of four-way stretch fabric to ensure a player has sufficient range of motion as he or she also receives greater protection from the elements. The Mid Layer comes in multiple colors.

And after that, there is the Outer Layer, which has been a staple of FootJoy’s product line for years and includes the recently revamped DryJoys Tour Collection line as well as the DryJoys Performance Light jackets, pants and shorts; the Softshell jacket and vest; and the Sport windshirt.

“What these products give golfers is a variety of options for a variety of conditions,” Jones explains. “They can wear the Base Layer under a golf shirt, or under the Mid Layer, or both. Or they can wear it with one of our Outer Layer pieces, too. They can mix and match as they please so they can stay comfortable no matter what the weather conditions may be.”
