Odyssey Putters Find Their Target

Callaway first learned about the value of visuals in putting when it brought out its extraordinarily successful Odyssey 2-Ball putter a decade ago. And the company is demonstrating just how important it thinks the matter of accurate target aim continues to be with the recent introduction of the Odyssey D.A.R.T. putter. D.A.R.T. stands for “Direction And Realignment Technology,” and it utilizes a dart-like pattern on the top of the putter head to more easily align the center of the putter face with the target when addressing the ball.

“It really is all about alignment with this putter, and D.A.R.T. works in a two-step process,” says Austie Rollinson, principal designer for Odyssey. “First, the golfer’s eyes align the putter to the target using the straight lines on the top of the putter head. From there, they complete the realignment by placing the apex of the D.A.R.T. design at the center of the golf ball. This ensures that the face of the putter is in line with the target and promotes consistent contact with the center of the face for greater distance control.”

According to Rollinson, the D.A.R.T. design is based on the brain’s ability to complete images the eyes do not see at first. In this case, he says, the mind completes the apex of the dart device in the center of the ball, ensuring the most accurate alignment possible.

“The completion of the D.A.R.T. device at the center of the ball is the key component to this new alignment technology,” he adds. “In designing these new putters, we examined the Gestalt Effect, which was developed in the late 1880s and is based on the theory that our senses have the capability to visually create whole forms rather than just a collection of simple lines and curves. The Odyssey D.A.R.T. putter utilizes this effect using multiple lines to create an image that refines alignment and helps golfers make more putts.”

Odyssey is employing the company’s latest multi-layer technology, called White Ice, in this line and offering mallet and blade versions as well as a Backstryke model.
