Mike Purkey: Many thanks should go to the members of Winged Foot Golf Club for approving the bid for the U.S. Open to return in 2020. No matter the amount of notoriety the national championship brings to a club, it’s still a tremendous sacrifice for the members to hold the Open there.
Word is that the USGA wanted to return to Winged Foot in 2015 and the members voted against it. This will be the sixth time the Open is held at Winged Foot and it’s been iconic every time, including Hale Irwin’s survival test in 1974 and Phil Mickelson’s historic collapse in 2006.
In case you’re wondering, Mickelson will be 50 for the 2020 Open.
