Phelps Faces The Crowd

Even by the out-sized standards of the 16th hole at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, what Michael Phelps walked into Wednesday was different.
Playing in the pro-am with Bubba Watson, Phelps drew a close-to-capacity crowd in the surrounding bleachers and what appeared to be a couple of hundred others on and around the par-3 tee when he arrived mid-afternoon.
Winning Olympic gold suddenly seemed simple compared to what Phelps was facing. His tee shot landed near the front of the green and rolled back down a slope, earning the traditional chorus of boos.
”I was very nervous,” Phelps said. “My club was shaking. I just tried to swing the club as fast as could. It’s wild.
”I had never heard boos. I’m sure it’s happened but I have my face under water. It was a little different experience.”
