Not Winning A Medal At Medalist

OK. I’m not ashamed to say it. I didn’t medal at the Medalist.

And it wasn’t because I didn’t play all that bad. It just so happened to be that one of the guys in our eight-man group was World No. 3 Luke Donald.

To kick off the Northwestern University Alumni Match weekend, held annually at The Bears Club in Jupiter, Fla., the eight-player “old guy” squad of NU golf alumni stopped off at the Medalist for a pre-match round at one of the coolest courses in South Florida. Home to Tiger Woods and some other Tour pros, it proved to be a handful with lightning-fast greens and howling winds (a solid 15 to 20 mph).

We played a skins match, $20 a guy. Needless to say, when birdies were hard to come by, the skins were scarce. Thankfully, the beers were not.

I had a glimmer of hope when I birdied the 10th hole from the pine straw. But go figure, when we gathered around the 18th green and tallied up the birdies … that Donald guy cut my only tweeter of the day.

Scores for the day: Donald shot 67, the next closest to him was 10 strokes back … and that wasn’t me.
