Rory McIlroy makes his PGA Tour debut Wednesday – weather permitting – in a first-round match against his friend Shane Lowry in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
McIlroy isn’t listening to critics, including Nick Faldo, who have suggested that his missed cut in Abu Dhabi was in part related to his switch to Nike equipment.
“Nick Faldo doesn’t know how I feel over the golf shot and I don’t know how he felt,” McIlroy said Tuesday. “But my guess is he was a little more analytically minded that I am. I try and keep things as simple as possible.
“If I see the ball going in the direction that I want in the flight that I want, then I’m happy. It feels good and hopefully I can show everyone this week.”
McIlroy says he has a different Nike putter in the bag this week and a slightly different shaft in his driver, otherwise, it’s the same equipment he took to Abu Dhabi.
If you’re wondering what Rory has been up to since he last played a tournament nearly a month ago, he spent time with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki in the French Alps, hung out in Monaco for a while then went to Florida to start practicing again.
Not a bad life.
