Floyd Statue Makes Great Welcome Committee

Although I didn’t score an invite to play the National on a recent visit to Augusta, Ga. (Condi must have misplaced my number), I laid eyes on another masterpiece: the stunning bronze sculpture of Raymond Floyd that greets travelers inside the Augusta Regional Airport terminal.

Created by artists Jeffrey and Anna Koh Varilla, the sculpture portrays Floyd following through on a pitch shot and captures the essence of the 1976 Masters champion, right down to his penetrating stare.

The work promotes a permanent golf exhibit at the Augusta Museum of History that includes sculptures of Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones. I’m no art critic, but for any Masters pilgrim en route to baggage claim, the Floyd sculpture is worth a stop.
