If you’re at home watching the Open Championship and imagining a golf trip to Scotland, or if you’ve already made the pilgrimage and are planning a return, consider this bit of advice:
Spend a substantial chunk of your time in the East Lothian area.
Located east of Edinburgh, a wonderful city worth at least a day of your time, East Lothian is home to Muirfield, North Berwick, Gullane, Dunbar, Musselburgh and a collection of other golf courses that give you everything Scottish golf has to offer.
St. Andrews gets the most attention because, well, it’s St. Andrews. The west coast of Scotland is stacked with outstanding links and up north there’s Castle Stuart, Nairn and Royal Dornoch.
In East Lothian, there is the combination of exceptional golf, charming towns, plenty of quality places to stay and the proximity to Edinburgh.
Muirfield is open to guests on Tuesdays and Thursdays and it’s the undeniable star of the area. But play North Berwick with its stone walls and original Redan hole and it will jump up the list of your favorite courses anywhere. It’s fun, it’s challenging, it’s different and it’s absolutely worth the trip.
The same can be said for East Lothian.
