One question loomed large over Muirfield Village Golf Club after the first full day of Presidents Cup practice for both teams.
What happened to Charl Schwartzel’s and Louis Oosthuizen’s hair?
“I didn’t even recognize Charl when I walked in the room,” Ernie Els said. “Walked straight past him and I had to kind of do a double take. It’s like what the hell happened to you? They don’t even cut our hair like that in the army back in the day.”
Schwartzel and Oosthuizen didn’t exactly get buzz cuts but they got more taken off than they had intended.
“This barber came in and didn’t work out as well as we thought,” Oosthuizen said. “We ended up shaving almost everything off. We looked like we came in from the army.
“Looking at each other, we just laughed. About six guys were supposed to get (haircuts). They stopped after Charl.”
Among other topics as Presidents Cup week gears up:
- Zach Johnson arrived Tuesday, one day later than planned, due to an illness that laid him out for a few days.Johnson was scheduled to fly with Matt Kuchar, assistant captain Davis Love III and their wives Monday but decided to spend another day home at Sea Island, Ga.
“I was literally quarantined in my bedroom,” Johnson said. “Slept for at least 16 1/2 hours Sunday to Monday. I feel fine. Not 100 percent, but I’m really close.”
- There’s a new 18th tee, 40 yards longer than it was during the Memorial, stretching the hole to 484 yards – if any of the matches get there.“It’s a good change. It plays more like it did 20 years ago,” Els said.Still, it was a 3-wood, 7-iron for Els Tuesday – downwind.
