Youngster Lawrence Storms To Middle Atlantic Amateur Title

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA | Virginia Junior Match Play champion Mark Lawrence roared in with a back-nine 32 in the final round Sunday to win the Middle Atlantic Amateur. Lawrence, of Henrico, Va., shot 7-under-par 281 at Kinloch Golf Club to prevail by two strokes ahead of Mikey Moyers, the 2013 Eastern Amateur champion from Stanardsville, Va. After opening with rounds of 72-70-71, Lawrence came from three strokes behind with his final-round 68. Ranked No. 89 in the AJGA/Polo Junior Rankings, the 16-year-old comes from a Virginia golf family; his father, Mark Sr., won the 1976 Virginia State Golf Associaton Junior Brady Exber Stroke Play title.
Recent Crump Cup runner-up Matt Sughrue, who played in the 2013 U.S. Senior Open in Omaha, Neb., finished third at 285. Wes Eklund and Jake Yount tied for fourth place while junior Bennett Buch and two-time champion Mike Muehr shared sixth.
