Tiger And Phil: Fade To Black

LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA | Let’s generously call this a false start. Or a soft opening. Or Phil and Tiger lameout like Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger. Nothing against Farmers Insurance Open winner Scott Stallings but last week at Torrey Pines was supposed to be about Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson – just not in the way it turned out. This was their 2014 PGA Tour coming-out party, like the red carpet on Oscars night. Everybody wants to see them before we find out if they win the big prizes. You had to look fast. Mickelson took a pass on the weekend after tweaking a back muscle on Thursday that spared him the potential frustration of two more days on the South Course, which he enjoys like a rash. No wonder. Too much rough and funky greens. Woods got Sunday off, a first time victim of the Saturday secondary cut, going from “a fraction off” to practically falling off the cliff onto nearby Black’s Beach where bathing suits are optional. How, you may ask, did Tiger shoot 79 on Saturday? He made a 15-footer for par on his finishing hole … after chipping in for par on his 17th hole. The best that could be said for Tiger and Phil is they had a better week than Justin Bieber. Mickelson’s situation can be explained as a precautionary measure. It was obvious on Friday that he wasn’t comfortable and was practically bunting the ball around Torrey Pines. At age 43, Mickelson is smart enough to know there are other weeks and other tournaments.
