Plenty Of Stories To Tell In Tinseltown

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIFORNIA | A funny thing happened while waiting for the Honda Classic – William McGirt.
A sweet thing happened – Jason Allred.
And an utterly human story was renewed – Charlie Beljan.
If this PGA Tour season has been short on superstars – Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and a presumably healthy Phil Mickelson finally get together at the Honda Classic in one more week – this gentle start to 2014 has done the work of a good ensemble, propelling the storyline without the presence of a clear protagonist. Jimmy Walker has come the closest, winning three times already in his wraparound season, while explaining that he likes to spend his free time taking photographs of galaxies far, far away. Perhaps we should call him Buzz Lightyear, whose battle cry “to infinity and beyond” fits Walker’s hobby and, at times, his golf game. Scott Stallings, winner in San Diego last month, celebrated his third career win by catching a stomach bug that ran through his family the next week. By winning at Phoenix, Kevin Stadler earned a spot in The Masters alongside his father, Craig, who will end his Augusta story by playing the final chapter with his son. It’s good stuff (except for the stomach bug). Maybe not sexy stuff but real stuff.
