Seventeen-year-old Australian amateur Minjee Lee won a professional event in her homeland on Sunday, the Australian Ladies Professional Golf tour’s Oates Victorian Open in Barwon Heads. With a final-round 68 on the Beach course at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links, the reigning Australian Women’s Amateur champion finished at 16-under-par 279, six strokes ahead of Scottish pro Vikki Laing (closing 66). Lee, third in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking, finished second to Cheyenne Woods at the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters earlier this month and T11 at the ISPS Handa Australian Ladies Masters last week. Matthew Griffin won PGA Tour of Australasia’s concurrent Oates Victorian Open at Thirteenth Beach in a playoff with countryman Matthew Stieger.
SHARP WINS ON SYMETRA TOUR
Alena Sharp won the Symetra Tour’s Visit Mesa Gateway Classic in Mesa, Ariz., on Sunday. Sharp, a 32-year-old Canadian pro who regained LPGA playing privileges this season by finishing ninth on the 2013 Symetra Tour money list, scored her first Symetra Tour victory with a final-round 71 at Longbow Golf Club. With her 12-under-par 204 total, Sharp finished two strokes ahead of Marissa Steen. Cheyenne Woods, who said after winning the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters that she will focus on earning an LPGA card via the Symetra Tour, finished T14.
