As you might imagine, Donald Trump is a hands-on owner and host.
Trump seemingly has been everywhere this week at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, chatting up players on the range, showing off the massive renovation project that is ongoing and, generally, being Donald Trump.
He’s understandably proud of what has happened at Trump National Doral in the past year. It’s a different place. The golf course (reworked by Olympics course designer Gil Hanse) is dramatically improved, the lodgings are getting a complete facelift and the whole place feels new.
There is a lingering smell of fresh paint in spots and there are places where construction crews are still busy renovating rooms.
Around the 800-acre property, Trump said workers have planted approximately 5,500 full-grown palm trees.
The scale and speed of the transformation have been remarkable.
“I’m a plus-10 at building,” Trump said. “I told Ernie (Els), you’re a plus-10 at playing and I’m a plus-10 at building. They are amazed we were able to build it so quickly. I told Gil, ‘If you need some help in Rio de Janeiro, I could do it very easily.’ ”
Count Rory McIlroy among the impressed.
“It just shows what you can do with a bit of hard work and a bit of cash,” he said.
