A final note about this week’s announcement that Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki have ended their engagement, just hours after sending out wedding invitations.
Three weeks ago, I had lunch with McIlroy in Charlotte and a sizable portion of the conversation centered on his relationship with Wozniacki. He’d just finished an overseas phone call with her and was looking forward to a week together in Rome after the Players Championship.
Even now, the idea that it would end as suddenly and publicly as it did is surprising.
McIlroy has gone so far as to shut off his cellphone and give away his laptop, according to reports out of the BMW PGA Championship this week.
He says the “problem is mine,” saying he realized he wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails. It’s one thing to face the media after shooting 73 in a tournament, something else all together to be peppered with questions about your love life.
At our lunch in Charlotte, McIlroy lit up talking about his then-fiancée.
He hasn’t shown many smiles this week.
