National Golf Club will now become Pinehurst No. 9.

There’s a new ninth course at Pinehurst.

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club announced Monday that it had acquired National Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus design, and it is renaming the layout Pinehurst No. 9.

The new No. 9 opened in 1989 and is also located in the Village of Pinehurst. It gives the resort the only Jack Nicklaus signature design in the area.

“We’re very excited to add this ninth course to our offering and look forward to welcoming National’s members to the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club family,” said Jay Biggs, senior vice president of golf and club operations for Pinehurst. “The golf course presents a challenging test in a beautiful setting that complements our eight other courses.”

The newly acquired property is available to club members immediately and will be open to resort guests in early July.

The resort also has plans for what will be a 10th course to be designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, who handled the restoration of Pinehurst No. 2. There is no announced timetable for the new course.
