Tiger Woods felt good enough today to play a practice round (scheduled for nine holes) with Steve Stricker and Davis Love III, raising hopes that he will be able to play in the PGA Championship when it begins Thursday.
Woods is scheduled to tee off at 8:35 a.m. with Phil Mickelson and Pádraig Harrington.
After three days of speculation following his withdrawal midway through the final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational due to another back issue, Woods arrived at Valhalla just after noon on Wednesday. His arrival was greeted by cheers from a crowd that surrounded the practice area and adjacent hillside.
When Woods hit his first practice shot, the crowd cheered again. Several thousand fans ringed the par-4 first hole when Woods and his playing companions began their practice round at approximately 2 p.m.
If Woods can play his practice round with no serious issues in his back, he’s expected to be a go for the year’s final major championship.
