As the U.S. team prepares for the Ryder Cup against Europe at Scotland’s famed Gleneagles Resort, there has emerged news regarding one would-have-been American competitor.
Dustin Johnson apparently will become a dad.
Johnson’s fiancée, Paulina Gretzky, announced the news on Instagram late Tuesday. The daughter of hockey great Wayne Gretzky posted a picture of herself showing off a noticeable baby bump.
Meanwhile Johnson, who went 3-0 as a U.S. captain’s pick at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah and no doubt would have added heft to this year’s American squad, remains on leave from professional golf to seek help for “personal challenges.”
It was reported after Johnson, 30, announced his indefinite hiatus in July that the PGA Tour had suspended the eight-time winner for testing positive for cocaine, but the Tour subsequently denied this, asserting that Johnson’s leave was voluntary.
Regardless of where the truth lies, by becoming a father Johnson will assume responsibility for another. Here’s hoping that he’s taking the steps he needs to fulfill that duty.
