SOUTHERN PINES, North Carolina – The first two rounds of the Callaway Golf Tournament of Club Champions powered by Global Golf Post could not have been more different.
Sunny and mild temperatures greeted players at Pine Needles Golf Club for the first round, while a chilly rain challenged players at Mid Pines Golf Club in the second round. The higher scores reflected the fickle weather.
Phil Skinner, representing Tartan Fields Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, emerged as the second-round leader at 9-over-par after opening with a 73 on Pine Needles, followed by a 79 at Mid Pines.
First-round leader John Hornbeck of Rondout Country Club in Accord, NY, carded scores of 72-89 to slip into second place, followed by Peter Nicholson of Mount Kisco Country Club in Mount Kisco, NY, with rounds of 79-83.
The weather in round two interrupted play mid-round, as the course became unplayable with standing water forming on greens, fairways and bunkers. After a break in action, the rain softened and the puddles dissipated, allowing players to complete the full 18 holes. The soggy conditions led to a big increase in scoring average from the first to second round.
The weather forecast for Sunday’s final round is vastly improved, with no rain expected.
The inaugural tournament brings together players who have won their club championships during the past five years, providing a high-level competition for accomplished golfers. The host venues are classic Donald Ross designs with multiple USGA national championships to their credit.
