Ireland is mourning the loss of Christy O’Connor Jr., the Galway pro best known for his heroic turn in the 1989 Ryder Cup.
O’Connor, 67, died suddenly in Spain, according to multiple news reports.
The four-time European Tour winner also won two Senior British Opens and two Champions Tour titles. His 2-iron to the last green at The Belfry in ’89 finished 4 feet from the hole, sealed victory against Fred Couples and helped Europe retain the Ryder Cup by virtue of a 14-14 tie.
O’Connor was the nephew of Christy O’Connor Sr., 91, another prominent Irish pro who made 10 Ryder Cup appearances.
