HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA | Had it been a secret, the giant red inflatable driver’s cap would have been a giveaway.
Bryson DeChambeau makes his professional debut this week in the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links and he spent a portion of Tuesday doing the duties of a professional golfer.
He conducted a news conference to talk about the new phase of his life then he did another media event, celebrating his new endorsement deal with Cobra Puma golf.
At an event on the back porch of the Inn at Harbour Town, a few steps from the first tee, DeChambeau showed off his new golf bag, his new clothes and his preferred style of headwear.
DeChambeau told the story of seeing a driver’s cap in a California golf shop when he was playing a junior tournament. His father bought it for him, DeChambeau won the tournament and he found his sartorial statement.
“I put it on and won the event and looked at my dad and said, ‘I can’t stop this,’ ” DeChambeau said.
It’s also a nod to the late Payne Stewart, who wore a similar style.
During the news conference – two hours before the Cobra Puma announcement – DeChambeau wore a more traditional golf cap. He saves the other style for game days.
“That’s my cape,” DeChambeau said. “So I only wear that for tournament days.”
