Jordan Spieth had some welcome words for a spelling bee champion on Tuesday.
In a video message aired on the Live with Kelly show, Spieth invited 13-year-old Jairam Hathwar, the co-champion of the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee, to the Barclays tournament at Bethpage Black in August. Upon winning the spelling bee last week, Hathwar revealed that he had been inspired by Spieth, particularly his ability to bounce back from bad shots. (Spieth segment starts at 1:45).
Before host Kelly Ripa unveiled the surprise message from Spieth, Hathwar elaborated on his regard for the two-time major winner.
“He’s only 21 years old and he’s taking on these veterans and showing that it doesn’t matter how old you are, you can still … put in the effort and do well,” he said.
