It was an acknowledgement, more than news, that Tiger Woods will not play in the PGA Championship next week at Baltusrol nor play in any other PGA Tour event in the 2015-16 season.
It would have been news had the announcement said something else.
The question remains: When will Woods return to competition?
The subsequent question is: Will Woods return to competition?
It has been 11 months since Woods played in the Wyndham Championship, leading after two rounds there before disappearing for a third back surgery after the tournament.
Woods has said in statements – and in the handful of interviews he has done – that he is continuing to recover from surgery and has been working on his game. He has insisted he will take his time to make sure he is completely recovered this time and that seems to be happening.
When and where we will see Woods on the course again remains conjecture.
Could he play a fall event on the PGA Tour? Perhaps.
Might he tee it up in the Hero World Challenge he will host in the Bahamas in early December? Maybe.
At the moment, Woods’ playing career remains on hold and no one knows for how long.
