According to a Bloomberg report, golf clothing and equipment retailer Golfsmith is considering filing for bankruptcy while it looks for a new owner.
The 150-store chain based in Austin, Tex. has reportedly hired Jefferies LLC to solicit buyers, but has not had success to this point. A sale could come as part of a Chapter 11 filing.
The Canadian chain Golf Town merged with Golfsmith in 2012 to create the largest specialty golf retailer in the world. OMERS Private Equity Inc., part of the Ontario municipal employees’ pension fund, owns both brands.
The news comes on the heels of Nike announcing that it will transition out of selling golf equipment.
