Despite what some of the kids on the LPGA Tour think, Juli Inkster is not old enough to have coined the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” But Inkster embraces that adage in a lot of ways: Her throwback golf swing, her no-nonsense attitudes, her straight-from-the-gut commentary, and, now, her approach to captaining the U.S. Solheim Cup team.
On Wednesday morning in Des Moines, Iowa, Inkster announced her vice captains for the 2017 matches that will be played at Des Moines Golf and Country Club. And to the surprise of no one, she picked the same crew that helped lead the U.S. to a come-from-behind victory in 2015 in Germany.
Wendy Ward, Pat Hurst and Nancy Lopez will join Inkster at the 15th staging of the event, which will take place August 18-20 of next year.
“I’m thrilled that we are able to bring back our entire staff from the Solheim Cup win in 2015,” Inkster said. “Pat, Wendy and Nancy bring a wealth of experience both as leaders and players in this event and will once again be magnificent resources to our entire squad. We are looking forward to the opportunity to repeat as champions and win on American soil.
“It was a no-brainer,” Inkster continued. “I just thought everybody handled their area perfectly. We all really just worked as one. I loved the camaraderie we had. I think the team really embraced all three of them.
“I just think it’s a laid-back group, and that’s kind of the atmosphere I wanted to project for 2015 and now for ’17.”
