The Best Stories From Arnold Palmer’s Memorial

In a beautiful ceremony that last about two hours and 20 minutes, the brilliant life of Arnold Palmer was celebrated with tears, laughs and stories.

Here are a few of the stories that stood out:

Charlie Mechem, lifelong friend of Arnie

It’s clear that he wasn’t fond of laying up, or coming in second.

Sam Saunders, grandson and professional golfer

Arnold would answer the phone when his loved ones called. Anywhere. And we mean anywhere.

Jack Nicklaus, 18-time major champion and rival to Palmer

Early on in Jack’s career at the 1962 U.S. Open, he found himself in a playoff with Palmer. It was often customary to split the gate instead of having one person walk away with far less, and Arnold wanted to give the young Nicklaus a fair share.

The gate was $1400 and Palmer offered to split it, knowing that Jack had a young family and the money meant a great deal to him.

Nicklaus decided that they would play for it, and he won the playoff.

Here are some of the best tweets from those around the golf world who attended the ceremony:
