Without providing any reason, Rory McIlroy informed European Tour officials that he has withdrawn from next week’s Turkish Airlines Open. The tournament is the first of three events in the Final Series for the Race to Dubai.
The world No. 3 is more than one million points behind Race to Dubai leader Danny Willett, but he had expressed desire in catching Willett and second-place Henrik Stenson to attempt to defend his title from last year.
Earlier this month, European Tour officials investigated reports that the region of Turkey where the event is being played was hit in a rocket attack. Turkish media reported that two rockets were fired from a mountainous area close to the highway linking the city of Antalya to the resort town of Kemer. The Tour has received assurances from security experts that it is safe to stage the event.
