Phil Mickelson has undergone a second surgery to repair a sports hernia and though a full recovery is expected, it is uncertain when the five-time major champion will return to competition.
Mickelson underwent surgery on the sports hernia in October but a second procedure was required.
It throws into question when Mickelson will make his 2017 debut on the PGA Tour. According to a statement released by his management company, Mickelson will be part of the CareerBuilder Challenge event Jan. 19-22 in Palm Desert, Calif., “at least in his role as tournament ambassador.”
Mickelson has had few injury issues during his career and is coming off a season in which he finished second in the Open Championship and played a key role in the U.S. Ryder Cup victory. He is seeking his first win since the 2013 Open Championship.
