The winning Ryder Cup captain is on injured reserve.
Davis Love III broke his collarbone in three places earlier this week while snowboarding with his son, Dru, in Sun Valley, Idaho, GolfChannel.com reported Thursday. The 21-time PGA Tour winner was flown to Birmingham, Ala., where he underwent surgery at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, the report said.
Doctors inserted a plate and eight screws into Love’s collarbone, according to the player’s manager, Mac Barnhardt.
“Davis said, ‘I committed the cardinal sin of following Dru down the mountain,’ ” Barnhardt said.
Love was slated to play in next week’s Sony Open, but competitive golf will be put on hold for around 12 weeks due to the accident. He is expected to start swinging a club again in six weeks.
The 1997 PGA champion recently led the U.S. to victory in the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008.
