Jim Furyk is set to be announced in the next week as the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, The Telegraph reported Saturday.

The selection committee’s choice came down to Furyk and Fred Couples, according to the report, which was written by James Corrigan, the British newspaper’s golf correspondent.

The report cited Furyk’s role as a vice captain to Davis Love III at the 2016 Ryder Cup, his involvement on the U.S. Ryder Cup task force following the Americans’ 2014 defeat and his enthusiasm for becoming captain for the 2018 match at Le Golf National near Paris as likely determining factors in the decision.

The report, which quoted Furyk discussing his desire for the captaincy last month, did not include comment from the 46-year-old Tour veteran – or any selection committee members or PGA of America officials – regarding the decision.
