Rory McIlroy is on the shelf.
McIlroy withdrew from this week’s Abu Dhabi Championship after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in one of his ribs. Even as he lost in a playoff to Graeme Storm in the South African Open last week, McIlroy complained of soreness in his back.
In a statement released Monday, McIlroy indicated there is no specific timetable for his return to competition.
“It’s bitterly disappointing. I think everyone knows how much I love playing this tournament,” McIlroy said.
“In situations like this you simply have to listen to the experts, and the team I have consulted have all advised me to rest until my rib has fully recovered.”
McIlroy is a four-time runner-up in the Abu Dhabi Championship.
