In this special episode of the PostCast, Sean Fairholm and Cassie Stein discuss how close Tiger is to the end of his career, the golf collapses that mirror the Atlanta Falcons’ Super Bowl meltdown and more.
The co-hosts are joined first by PGA Tour insider Ron Green Jr. and then by amateur golf expert John Steinbreder. Green Jr. may be unsure of his ability to hit the 16th green at TPC Scottsdale in a Phoenix Open setting with thousands of fans screaming at him, but he is fairly certain it is time to dial the festivities back:
“I wonder a little bit if it’s gone a little too far toward the party thing. I enjoy that they have made it into what they have and I think there is room for that on the PGA Tour … but at some point, how big do you go? How much more can you do? How much more do you need? It’s no secret that most of the people aren’t there for the golf.”
Green Jr. then delves into a long discussion about whether Tiger is close to the end of his career:
“It would be a shame if we don’t get to see him one more time fully healthy having a chance to put a finishing flourish on his career. If we never see him healthy again, it doesn’t change the fact that he has played the best golf that has ever been played.”
Cassie and Sean then chat with Steinbreder about Ole Miss sophomore Braden Thornberry, the winner of the prestigious Jones Cup at Ocean Forest Club in Sea Island, Ga. this past weekend:
“I’ve spent a lot of time this week with Spider Miller who is the captain of the U.S. Walker Cup team and prior to this fall, I don’t think Spider knew a lot about (Thornberry). He wasn’t invited to be on that practice squad that played out at Los Angeles Country Club in December, the 16 guys in that group. It’s safe to say he was under the radar.”
To conclude the show, Sean and Cassie run down the schedule for the week and offer up their picks for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
