U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk announced the selection criteria for his team in the 2018 Ryder Cup, to be played at Le Golf National outside Paris.
In 2017, only the majors, WGC events and the Players Championship will count towards the point total for each player. The following year, regular PGA Tour events will be counted with an emphasis on the majors.
The top eight players on the points list at the conclusion of the 2018 PGA Championship will qualify automatically for the team. Furyk will have four captain’s picks, three of which he will announce after the Dell Technologies Championship the first week of September. Furyk will announce the final pick after the BMW Championship the following week.
The decision to announce the wild-card picks early in September is a departure from the 2016 qualification process, where the final pick wasn’t announced until after the Tour Championship, the Sunday before the matches at Hazeltine National.
The European Ryder Cup qualification process has been significantly altered for 2018. Captain Thomas Bjorn will have an additional wild-card pick and the European Tour has altered its membership criteria in an effort to include more players who may spend most of their time on the PGA Tour.
