QUICK TAKE: With the Help of Coffee and Beef, Mickelson Off to a Strong Start

MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Of course Phil Mickelson loves being in Mexico.

And not just because he shares the first-round lead of the WGC-Mexico Championship after carding a 4-under-par 67 at Club de Golf Chapultepec.


There’s so much that Mickelson likes.

“My family and I, we’ve come to Mexico. We would come once or twice a year but we would go to Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Cabo San Lucas, where I’ve only been to Mexico City one time and it was 30 years ago,” Mickelson said.

“I’m really enjoying it. The food here is spectacular. The coffee – I love coffee – the coffee here is tremendous.”

Mickelson even managed to drop a little Spanish into his post-round interview Thursday, saying “el carne” is what he’s eaten the most this week. That’s beef, by the way.

“I’m very limited on my Spanish so let’s not overdo it, okay?” Mickelson said.
