Jason Day was on the golf course at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club in Texas on Wednesday but his heart and mind were elsewhere.
With his mother facing surgery for lung cancer Friday, Day abruptly withdrew from the event, stopping after six holes of his match with Pat Perez.
During a brief, emotional meeting with the media, Day wiped away tears as he discussed his decision to withdraw.

“It’s been a very, very hard time for me to play golf. Emotionally it’s been wearing on me as well,” Day said. “I just need some time away to make sure things go well. This has been very, very tough for me
“She is the reason I play golf today. Family is first. It’s just a hard time. I just wanted to make sure and get out there that this is the reason why.”
Day said his mother, Dening Day, was given 12 months to live by doctors and is due to have surgery to remove a mass in her lungs Friday.
“We’re hoping for a speedy recovery for her, to get this behind her and she can live a long life,” said Day, the defending champion of the event.
Day lost his father, Alvin, to stomach cancer when he was 12 years old.
