The par-3 17th has exacted its revenge on the Players Championship field this year, luring more than 50 balls into the water before three rounds even were finished.
Two of those belong to Ben Crane, although he didn’t deserve his fate.
Crane’s first attempt Saturday slammed into the bulkhead fronting the green and ricocheted back into the water. His second attempt hit the flagstick and then rolled back into the drink.
Bulkhead to water? Sure.
Flag to water? Unlucky.

He may have been the first to enter the water on No. 17 in the third round, but it is expected that he will be far from the last.
