NEWS: Hockey Flourish Coming To Canadian Open

Players can expect a little bit of hockey when they arrive at the Canadian Open.

In a nod to Canada’s national obsession, and perhaps in an effort to re-create the atmosphere of the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale during the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the RBC Canadian Open will surround one of its par-3 holes this year with hockey rink boards.

The seventh hole at Glen Abbey in Oakville, Ont., also will feature arena-style bleachers and viewing decks, marshals wearing striped referee jerseys, and a Zamboni on display.

“We wanted to create an experience that oozed Canadiana,” tournament director Brent McLaughlin said, adding the new fan experience is also a gesture to Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations this year.

The Canadian Open begins July 27.
