CHARLOTTE, N.C. | The practice tee at Quail Hollow Club was surprisingly busy Monday morning because of the threat of afternoon thunderstorms which could disrupt this PGA Championship from start to finish.
Something else was different.
The PGA of America decided to allow players to wear shorts Monday through Wednesday in anticipation of stifling heat. At the moment, the forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-80s with soupy humidity and the players took full advantage of the relaxed dress code.
“I love it,” said Jordan Spieth, who was wearing shorts. “It’s like being at home.”
Spieth wasn’t the only player in shorts. Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, Graeme McDowell, Jamie Lovemark, Jimmy Walker and Kevin Kisner were in shorts.
The European Tour has loosened the dress code for pre-tournament days and the PGA of America took the initiative this week. The PGA Tour hasn’t adopted the shorts on practice days policy yet.
Could it happen?
Sounds like the players are in favor.
“Every day, every week,” Kisner said.
