Brad King has long loved the royal and ancient game, so much so that in addition to teeing it up himself since his youth, he even coached the high school golf team in the town of Apex, North Carolina, for a spell. But that gig was only a sideline, for it was in office products where he made his career early on, first as a senior sales representative for a company based in the state capital of Raleigh and then as the founder and CEO of a concern in that same industry called Lonesource.
“We were able to build it into the sixth largest office products company in the country,” King said. “Then in 2013, I sold it to Staples.”
But selling out did not mean getting out of that business, and King then went to work for Staples as its managing director of mergers and acquisitions.
“It was a good job, and Staples was paying me well,” King recalled. “I was happy with what I was doing.”
