Most companies have a good story about how they were founded, and the one about how the apparel maker Player2 came to be ranks among the better ones.
“I was playing golf with two good friends, Dave Petrie and Bill McGarry,” said AJ Romeo, a sports marketing executive residing in Ridgefield, Connecticut. “I hit a bad tee shot, and the ball was clearly lost. So Bill said, ‘Drop another.’ That’s what I did, and when I striped that second drive down the middle of the fairway, Bill said, ‘Player 2 always comes through.’
“We all chuckled at that comment and later on started talking about creating a golf brand around that name. We all love golf. We are all entrepreneurs, with David being a co-founder of Blue Buffalo Co., the natural pet food maker, and Bill the senior vice president for advertising sales and strategic partnerships at AccuWeather. And we thought we could speak to golfers who are just as passionate about the game as we are.”
