SPRINGFIELD, NEW JERSEY | It had a feel only a few of us remember. When Rose Zhang showed up on the practice tee at Baltusrol Golf Club before the first shots of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, a crowd of fans clustered around the fence rail, phones held high.
“Oh, that’s her,” one woman said in a voice you might use if Taylor Swift walked into your local Starbucks.
“What does that remind you of?” I asked Dean Herden, former Australian Tour player and veteran caddie for In Gee Chun.
“Looks like when Michelle Wie first came out,” Herden said.
Exactly.
You need gray hair and achy knees to remember and appreciate when the teenaged Wie sent a jolt of electricity through women’s golf more than 20 years ago, swinging like Ernie Els and competing in just enough men’s events to captivate a mass audience.
