The Best Celebrity Players In The Field Made A Living On The Mound
ORLANDO, FLORIDA | A little after 9:30 on Saturday morning, Jon Lester and Tom Glavine took their scorecards and a handful of tees from the starters tent beside the first tee at Tranquilo Golf Club. Seconds later, both Cy Young Award-winning pitchers striped tee shots down the opening fairway. Lester hit a long iron, Glavine a hybrid. Both were as long as their playing partner, seven-time LPGA winner Sei Young Kim.
That shouldn’t be a surprise. From surveying the celebrity field at the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions, this much is clear: The athletes with the most time to work on getting good at golf are starting pitchers in baseball. They take the mound once every five days, usually at night. That gives them a ton of time to play. Many of them have become really good.
There are 13 pitchers in the field at the LPGA season-opener, about 30 percent of the celebrity competitors. That baker’s dozen has a combined 2,397 major league victories. That‘s not too shabby....
