Richard Gillis

Richard’s career mixes award-winning journalism with a role as a strategic adviser to sport governing bodies, sponsors and agencies. In 2019 he was listed number five in the sport category of PR Week’s Powerbook list of industry influencers, and was recently named in Sportico’s top sports business people to follow.

The Unofficial Partner sports business podcast is the leading sports business podcast in the UK and Europe, with a community of listeners from across sport and the industry sectors it touches.
His book on leadership in sport, The Captain Myth, was named as The Guardian’s golf book of the year in 2016.
As a journalist, Richard was editor of SportBusiness International (2000-2004) before writing for a host of major international news organisations including the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, The Irish Times and many leading magazine and online titles.

Between 2014 – 2019, Richard was Managing Partner of a specialist sport and entertainment consulting group within Havas, the sixth largest marketing group in the world. Clients included BT/EE, Molson Coors, Domino’s, Premier League, Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, UNICEF and Otro (the football digital platform owned by David Beckham, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr). Before joining Havas, Richard was a strategic comms advisor to Lloyds Bank on its London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Official Partnership.
