Six Americans remain in U.S. Amateur chase

fter a grueling Thursday at Merion Golf Club, the 126th U.S. Amateur quarterfinals matches are set. Today, eight elite amateurs will compete for four spots in Saturday’s semifinals with one ultimate goal: to lift the Havemeyer Trophy on Sunday and claim their first USGA championship. And for the six American players remaining in the championship, a victory would deliver an automatic berth on the U.S. Walker Cup team at Lahinch. In the first match (1:15 p.m. ET), the 48th-seeded Brandon Knight (534th in the World Amateur Golf Ranking) will take on the eighth-seeded Carter Loflin (47th in the WAGR). In the round of 64, Knight dominated 2025 Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cupper Connor Graham, 6 and 5. The rising University of Colorado senior trailed early in the round of 32 to Noah Kent before storming back to win, 3 and 2. In his round of 16 match against Gaven Lane, Knight didn’t lead until he won the 18th hole with a bogey despite a poor tee shot. He was 3 down through nine and tied the match with a par on 17. “I’m definitely learning that I can compete with these guys,” Knight said. “I feel like I belong here.” Loflin, who recently completed his senior season at the University of Georgia, trailed for one hole total in his matches against Grayson Wood, Wolfgang Glawe and William Jennings, which he won 1 up, 3 and 1, and in 19 holes, respectively. In his round of 16 match against Jennings, Loflin lost Nos. 17 and 18 but bounced back to win the 19th with a birdie.
